Empowering Rural Communities:

Unlocking Opportunities

Alabama’s rural communities are the heart and soul of our state. At Alabama Farm Credit (AFC), we don’t just see farmland, crops, or barns… we see the families, dreams, and legacies they represent.

Alabama’s rural communities are the heart and soul of our state. At Alabama Farm Credit (AFC), we don’t just see farmland, crops, or barns… we see the families, dreams, and legacies they represent. It’s those stories, and the people behind them, that drive our mission. As someone who grew up understanding the grit, determination, and sacrifices that come with rural life, I take pride in how AFC empowers these communities through transparent financial practices, meaningful partnerships, and a cooperative model that truly puts people first.

A Cooperative Model That Gives Back

Thanks to AFC’s cooperative model, that farmer has more than a lender, they have a partner who works all year to contribute back to their success. Over the last decade, AFC has returned more than $100 million in patronage refunds directly to our members. For many, that refund means their kids’ college tuition is covered, new equipment can be purchased, or they can simply rest a little easier. That’s the beauty of community-driven finance, it’s not just about loans; it’s about lifting each other up.

Leadership Rooted in Service

At AFC, everything begins with trust. Under the leadership of CEO Mel Koller, that trust is built on transparency and an unwavering commitment to our members. I’ve heard Mel say countless times, “Every decision we make starts with one question: How will this benefit our members?” That’s the kind of leadership that creates real change, leadership that puts people first. For farmers, ranchers, and rural businesses, it’s not just about financial services, it’s about knowing someone is being a steward of their cooperative, no matter what.

Investing in the Next Generation

The future of rural Alabama rests in the hands of its youth, and at AFC, we’re intentional about investing in their success. Programs like our Young Farmers Advisory Council provide the next generation with tools, resources, and confidence to carry on their family legacies. I’ve seen firsthand how AFC’s support gives young farmers the courage to dream bigger and work harder. It’s not just about producing crops or growing livestock; it’s about growing leaders who will shape the future of our rural communities. By fostering innovation and encouraging collaboration, we’re helping these young leaders tackle challenges with fresh perspectives. Their success is vital not only to the agricultural industry but also to the economic and social prosperity of Alabama as a whole. These young farmers are more than stewards of the land—they are champions of rural resilience and progress. With continued investment, we can ensure they have the skills and opportunities needed to leave a lasting impact for generations to come.

A Community That Cares

There’s an old saying that it takes a village to raise a child, but I believe it takes a village to build a community. That’s why AFC proudly partners with organizations like The Link in Cullman and the Alabama 4-H Foundation. These partnerships aren’t just investments, they’re commitments to a better future. When you see kids smiling as they learn about agriculture at a 4-H event, or hear the gratitude in someone’s voice as their life is changed through community programs, it’s clear that this work goes far beyond banking. It’s about people, and it’s deeply personal.

Inclusion in Every Field

At AFC, we believe agriculture should be a place for everyone. We’re fostering a future where diversity is not just accepted but celebrated. The fields of Alabama are strongest when they reflect the diversity of the people who work them. Everyone, no matter their background, deserves the opportunity to be part of this vital industry.

"To us at AFC, our members are more than clients… they’re our neighbors, friends, and partners." - Jody Campbell

A Shared Vision for the Future

We celebrate successes and stand alongside our clients through their toughest seasons, because when rural communities thrive, we all thrive. I’ve sat at kitchen tables, listened to struggles, and celebrated victories with many of our members and AFC teammates. That’s what it means to truly serve, to walk alongside people, not just finance their dreams, but believe in them.
