What is Your Purpose?

A Framework for Purpose-Driven Leadership

While attending graduate school at Baylor University, I was fortunate enough to read one of Simon Sinek's books titled, Start with Why. If you've read this book or listened to his TedTalk, you would know that he believes that, "people dont buy what you do, they buy why you do it". In other words, people don’t follow leaders because of their position in the company, they aren’t inspired by your actions but rather they are inspired by what drives you to do the things that you do.

If you're like me, you might then consider why did you choose the career path that you have gone down? What is your cause? What is your purpose statement? To answer this for myself, I answered the following questions:
💡What are your values?
💡What are your natural talents?
💡What are your (learned) skills and expertise?
💡What are you passionate about?

Since then, I've used this framework many times to help people understand who I am and why I chose my path. I hope that this helps them understand me better and, in turn, be inspired to do the things that we do.I have also found that when leading others, it's very beneficial to have them answer these same questions. This has helped me better understand their own personal brand of "why" and how we as an organization can lean into their natural talents, utilize their skills and expertise and give them work that aligns with their values and passion. I hope that you found this helpful and, if you haven't already done so, please give Simon's TedTalk a listen. You wont be disappointed.
